STONE LEAVES - CROXFORD STEPS UP

Following last Saturday’s very disappointing performance manager Kevin Stone immediately offered his resignation to the Club and after considering this over the next 24 hours it has been accepted.

Assistant Manager Steve Croxford has agreed to take over in the interim period whilst a permanent solution is pursued and this will give him the opportunity to decide whether he would like to be considered as a permanent replacement along with any other applicants that may make themselves available for consideration.

Kevin’s association with the Club goes back to his first contact when he was 8 years old and he has served the Club over a long period as player and manager. Marlow F.C is most grateful to him for this long service and commitment and would like to wish him well for the future in the knowledge that he will always be most welcome at Oak Tree Road.

CUTHBERT OTTAWAY - ENGLAND'S FIRST CAPTAIN

England's First Captain - and Marlow player

Ask people "who was England's first ever captain?" and the chances are they won't know. The answer is Cuthbert John Ottaway. England’s captain in the world’s first ever international match when England played Scotland back in 1872. At a time of multi million pound players English football seems to have forgotten their first ever hero. Yet the man was a sporting phenomenon, a true legend. He would be worth millions in today's world. He also played for Marlow

Born in Dover in 1850, he went on to become the only student to represent Oxford University at ‘Blue’ level in five different sports, played first-class cricket at the highest level and appeared in three F.A. Finals. He did it all as an amateur, finding time, also, to qualify as a barrister, before dying at the young age of 27 in the spring of 1878. Cuthbert was a skilful quick footed forward, . He only played twice for England both as captain and both in Glasgow against Scotland. He appeared in three consecutive F.A.Cup Finals during 1873-75. The first, at the Lillie Bridge Grounds in West Brompton, was for the Oxford University side which suffered defeat at the hands of The Wanderers.

The Cup Finals of 1874 and 1875 were played at Kennington Oval. The first brought Oxford University their one and only F.A.Cup Final triumph when Ottaway captained them to victory against the Royal Engineers. The 1875 Final saw Cuthbert turn out for Old Etonians against the Royal Engineers – a match which was drawn, with the Old Etonians losing the replay. During the 1875 final Cuthbert suffered an injury which ended his career and he never played again.

Ottaway also played at least once for Marlow FC and Crystal Palace FC (not the same Crystal Palace of today) in the early 1870s.On the 11/11/1871 he played against Marlow for Mr. C Clay's Eleven from Oxford and obviously had a good game. Quoting from the paper "When science exhibited by Mr, Ottaway, how a ball ought to be taken through a host of foes". I believe that he impressed so much that Marlow FC asked him to turn out for them in possibly his one and only appearance for them. The match was in the first ever FA Cup competition. Marlow lost and he then played for Crystal Palace before joining the Oxford University side. This was in the days before you could be 'cup tied'.

Then came his career-ending injury. On his retirement from sport in the autumn of 1876, Ottaway turned to his legal career. He was called to the Bar on 17th November 1876 – officially becoming a barrister-at-law, taking up chambers at Lamb Building, Temple, London. Within a year Cuthbert married Marion Stinson (in Canada) and they settled in London. Then, with his wife heavily pregnant with their first child, he died from pneumonia on 2nd April 1878 after having contracted ‘a chill’ during a night out.

Cuthbert was buried in Paddington Old Cemetery off Willesden Lane. Today his grave is badly neglected. Sad though the plot now appears, the original monument was a good deal more lavish: The inscription – now long-gone – once read:“In memory of Cuthbert John Ottaway, only child of James Cuthbert & Jane Ottaway, born July 20th [error] 1850, died April 2nd 1878.” The grand-sounding monument was dismantled in 1972 by Westminster Council, leaving the single (and rather sad-looking) unmarked base-slab which is all that survives today. I would argue that today’s multi-million pound football industry owes its first international captain a good deal more in the way of recognition. In honour of Cuthberts memory Englandfans FC will play a match against Belgiumfans FC on Saturday 2nd June at Bedfont Town. The match will be played for The Cuthbert Ottaway Memorial Cup.

It is also planned to play a game between Englandfans FC and Marlow FC at Riley Park, Marlow (previously Crown Meadow the home of Marlow Football Club from 1870 to 1914).

In order to give Cuthbert a fitting place to rest a fund is being raised for a memorial. Already support has come from the Professional Footballers Association, Cuthbert’s family and Marlow FC.
